creativity

We went down to the river as a fam and celebrated June's bday. Wonderful, as usual. The water is slowly getting more and more shallow..., so we'll try and take advantage of it before it gets too mucky and stops moving/gets gross and stagnant. I realize, from looking at other people's blogs, that they probably don't have as many pics of their husbands half naked. I do it ONLY because we swim a lot..nothing more. (other than the fact that Geof. is HOT in a swimsuit).

Can't get too much of this, right? I know, I know..barf.

It's so warm! Why aren't we there now, I'm thinking..?

I called Comcast a few days ago and cancelled cable, completely. Nothing but fuzz. It's great. Even Geof. who appreciates watching sports now and then was glad we did it. Now we don't have to find Cole vegged out in front of the T.V. watching those ridiculous preteen Disney and Nickelodeon shows depicting adults as complete morons, and the teenagers as great big, smart, know-it-alls!

And you know what, the change has brought a sense of creativity into our home again (just what I wanted). Cole's discovered that Jenga blocks can be really fun (I've been trying forever to get him into building-I LOVED building as a kid). It's pure bliss to see a kid playing by himself for a good hour-which in Cole's case doesn't happen very often. Love you Cole. (;

That looks like SO much FUN! It reminds me of that cool place we went in California with your fam way back when! June singing her little heart out during her own birthday song is too cute. And geof's singing? SO amazing...

PS I forgot to say that we also cancelled our cable (it was the lame-o kind with hardly any channels aside from the ones that are supposed to be free anyways) but probably only for the summer, come this next Fairbanks winter I'm sure we'll be hooking it back up again!

You took the words right out of my mouth! Adam really wants to buy Kaia and Tristan a Wii for their birthdays (he probably already did it for all I know) and I'm trying to convince him that the video games/tv rob them of their creativity time. And well said about the disney shows making adults look dumb, same with shows like "According to Jim".

Darla,
Thanks for the great pictures and excellent example your are to all of us honey. Times have sure changed . . . I didn't see my first TV until I was almost 12 in 1954-55. I don't know if we have the courage to drop it all. I do love to Tevo (sp?) old movies and the Tour de France . . . Love you Geoff and those grandkids.

I envy you having no tv. It is like I love watching shows with jeff, but I love to play games with him (even though he always wins). ANd to talk and read and cook together too! Why do we let the tv rule our time with each other and why don't we do those other special things?
I give you great praise for taking the plunge! Enjoy this time...

Your suit is so cute Darla! It totally fits your style and personality so well. Where did you find it? I just had baby number two and I'm in need of a suit that is super cute too.

what a fun river spot! i just had to agree with you about the pre-teen shows. the kids on them are way too sassy, not to mention dates and kissing in jr high?! i'd love to cancel tv. we did scale back our chanels, which was a good start. anyway, happy birthday to june, and love to you and your cute family.

So glad you decided to turn off the TV... We don't have cable either, there's always just a bunch of dumb channels we were dissatisfied with, yet we would wait and wait for something to come on. A total time waster and NOT what I want to be doing during our precious few hours of evening and weekend free time. So we waste it on the internet instead!!! at least we miss commercials and we're not 'waiting' for shows to come on...So glad you decided to turn off the TV... Darla, can you delete this comment and my 1st (not 2nd comment above?) the 1st one has my message repeated twice for some reason. Thx!
